I wanted to like this book. Normally when I get 70% into a book I'll just finish it but this was 40+ chapters of the same scene on repeat.

Hurt/comfort is a great trope and I understand the FMC was meant to be healing from traumas that would tie into the broader plot. But I don't think this trope was used successfully. There was no character development in the nearly 400 pages I read and it was taking way too long to get to the point. This is part of a duet but it definitely could have been one book.

I wound up skimming most of it by the end because I already knew what was happening - the same insecurities appearing in the exact same way and the MMCs reassuring her in the exact same way, just for her to be insecure about the exact same things and be reassured in the exact same way in the next chapter.

I’m all for mental health discussions/struggles in books but the author’s word choices surrounding her body issues made me v uncomfortable; I also feel like their backstories came out in big trauma dumps rather than naturally revealing.
The beginning called this book cozy and I definitely do not agree with that. I was stressing from beginning to end.

This is all sort of just thinly veiled allegory for the current american political climate…
I wasn’t gonna read the second one and I haven’t decided if I am, but the (very predictable) ending stressed me out so fuckin much I might need to

I really enjoyed this book. It was a bit of a rough read from a trauma perspective. The characters are loveable and it's a bit like a slice-of-life that has them coming together to deal with their shit. Sprinkle in a bit of fighting to overthrow a distopian government. Be sure to read TWs.

This story of healing and giving love a second change is an absolute heart tugger and IM SO EXCITED FOR BOOK TWO!
You can not help but fall in love with all of Pack Ashwood because they just have so much love to give to Josie and she deserves every drop of it.
The driving scene is so funny!
I can’t wait for more
