I read this a while ago but I still like going back and rereading it. This is a children's series but there's some rather dark and disturbing material...which appeals to me, haha. It's a unique fantasy series with strong emotion.

This book didn't have much of a plot. The main character,Twig just ping pongs from one disaster to the next. My loyal love of the illustrator, [a:Chris Riddell|59749|Chris Riddell|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1276920548p2/59749.jpg] requires me to try the next one anyway.

This was my 24th book finished in 2023.
I read this on my Caribbean cruise, between stops in Belize, Mexico and Florida. I left it in a hostel in Miami Beach, FL.
This is the first time I've read this book since I was about 10 years old. It had good world building, and was easy enough to read.
It annoyed me throughout that Twig kept mysteriously escaping from dire situations. The climax at the end was disappointing and frustrating.
I'd be interested in digging out the other books in the series from the loft.

Beyond the Deepwoods was a book I first read back when I was in 6th grade...and then again a couple years later...and again after that. Though the books are written simply enough for younger audiences to read them, I still don't feel weird by reading them now at the age of sixteen. The stories are actually very good, and the illustrations don't make it a picture book, but instead are there to show what the strange world and its inhabitants looks like.
This first book of the series certainly does a great job of starting off a great series. It tells the adventures of a boy who is on a journey through a treacherous forest when he accidentally strays from the path that keeps him safe. After he becomes lost, he is forced to face the many deadly creatures he comes across along his adventure and eventually is faced with the decision of who his identity really is. The story is quick-paced and exciting, with each chapter keeping you wondering what sort of perils he'll face and what new way he'll be able to get out of the awful situations. Though everyone might not agree with my rating, I thought it deserved five stars because this was a book I loved when I was younger and am still able to enjoy to this day.

so incredibly strange...it's almost disturbing to read. at first, the odd names and descriptions just about send you over the edge (no pun intended), but if you keep going you really start to like it.
