Zack King can't believe how lucky he is. His fiancee is gorgeous and well out of his league. Though his father left many years ago, Zack has moved on. He lives with his best friend and has a decent job as a middleman. However, hidden behind a happy facade is reality. Zack and jed are simply going through the motions of living as they continue to mourn their best friend Rael who passed away two years before the story picks up. Meanwhile, Zack is in love with Rael's widow but too afraid to do anything about it. To make matters worse, Zacks deadbeat dad shows up saying he just wants to get to know his sons. Zack and his younger brother Matt distrust their father but their other brother, who is mentally handicapped, is overjoyed to see him. Zack stops going to work, spends more and more time with Rael's widow, and could possibly have cancer. The ending to this book is not what I had expected, but that just made it even better.
Bah humbug. I'm not sure who he's writing this for. It's presumably targeted toward women--all about family issues and masculinity and romance--but all the fight scenes seem a little over the top. Does he think women have some deep desire for men who fight? Not this one. And, in my experience, men don't break out in fistfights nearly as often as Tropper suggests. It reminds me of Richard Ford in that respect.
No regrets reading it. It's not completely fluff. But doesn't hold a candle to [b:This is Where I Leave You|6224935|This is Where I Leave You|Jonathan Tropper|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1467397162l/6224935._SY75_.jpg|6405647].

I could not bring myself to like the main character. So much sexism and selfishness.
This is the first Jonathan Tropper novel I've read. He is definitely a talented writer. This was an entertaining book; funny and at times heartwarming. I even got a little emotional at the end.
While the protagonist isn’t my favorite, the story is engaging.
Although well written, it's kind of one of those comical movies, about a guy and his troubles and how his family is involved in them and there are funny moments, there's trouble and some chaos, and there's the final resolution, where everything is probably not fixed, but okay. It's a good formula to spend a good time to, but it's not a masterpiece. It is interesting to read about a guy and his problems, because as a woman it is of some use to understand the "male mind", but it turns out that it is of course the same as any women's mind, we are not that different. Probably you could take away some of the sexual stuff, but let's not get fooled by that, we all love some good sex. All in all, the book is good, the story is well written, it probably lacks some good depth, but it's maybe not what this book is about. In the end, it's a good read, but it won't be as meaningful as it could be.
His books have gotten better since this one was written. Too predictable for me.
I've read most, if not all, if Tropper's books and this is hands down my favorite. It features the standard Tropper tropes (dysfunctional family, protagonist's life falling apart in their 30s), but it has such a moving ending. It was very hard to put down and will undoubtedly be one of my favorites this year.
