George R.R Martin definitely started a new trend in fantasy and unfortunately you gotta give the man his dues. Character development paired with slow rising tension and political intrigue will never be boring when handled by someone gifted with true talent.

I liked the children's chapters the best, mainly Sansa's and Aria's. I didn't like the amount of sexual and misogynistic comments and actions of characters. I probably won't be continuing the series.

One of the things I appreciated about reading Game of Thrones after seeing the HBO series was getting more insight into the various characters' psyches. Clash of Kings also provides this advantage, but in addition to that, you get more back story and side stories than you do in Game of Thrones. As with the first book, I have a great appreciation for Martin's world building, and the story, though epic, still seems fairly well focused. The side stories and back story all seem to have a purpose. So far, so good.
