Another great read. With every trilogy set in the Valdemar world, I always need a couple of chapters to really get into the characters, but when that is done, I really get into the story and love every bit of it. I love Vanyel, even though he remains almost to the end a bit full of himself at times. But his heart is in the right place and he does learn from his mistakes eventually. You can feel the story building up to a great and bitter ending but you feel hope of a better ending all the way. And somehow you get both the bitter and the better. It takes a very good writer to pull that of and Mercedes Lackey did.

A millionth re-read. The world of Valdemar and the Heralds is my trusty comfort read from when I was a preteen.

Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar Universe is fantastic enough, but openly gay characters in a high fantasy setting? With a story that doesn't revolve around them being gay? That alone would convince me to read the books. But seriously, it's hard to find a downside to a series with awesome female characters, well-rounded characters, magic battles, and great prose, even if my copy had a few type-os.

A good read!

I started reading this series many years ago and have picked it back up and put it down again several times in the intervening time. It’s a stirring tale and I’m glad to have read it.

I read this series probably 25 times when I was a young person, and it really holds up so well.
