GARY D. SCHMIDT
This is a collection of stories from the Holocaust. Most of the stories are folktale, or a combination of tales, and a combination of truth. It's a great read to learn about the culture, thoughts, feelings, and experiences of Jews during WWII. They're sad by nature, but they are also inspiring stories, as many of them are stories about Rabbis who kept their faith. It is a unique telling of the Holocaust and the Jewish culture, and would be appropriate for any age to read, but I can see this being for middle grade students.

Part of my "read three books by the same author" challenge of the year. This is one of Schmidt's less known works - a compilation of short stories told by Mara while living as a prisoner in Auschwitz. As you can imagine, it's heart-breaking. I didn't love it as far as short stories go - but I am glad I read it. It's different than most of Schmidt's books and even though it's short stories I wanted a continuous thread to pull throughout the stories - it just wasn't there.

Set in the concentration camps, Mara tells stories nightly to those sharing the crowded, frightening conditions that had become their life. The stories are filled with hope and sorrow, love and anger. Touches your soul if you let it.
