just finished this book about two minutes ago and ???
okay so the concept is weird in itself; usually with murder mystery books you have a murder which then allows the mystery to ensue, but with this book, there wasn’t actually a confirmed murder until like the last 100 pages. and it’s odd because this all starts with a girl saying “hey poirot! i might’ve killed someone…okay bye!” LIKE WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THAT?! and then you essentially spend the whole book going in circles with the same details. and for the longest while no major connections are made and so you’re kinda just sat there waiting for something to happen.
there’s a bit of a mind-twist where at some points during the book you think you know more than the characters (or at least i thought so) but then in reality they know more than you? and okay yeah i really didn’t like the brunt of this book but i was hoping for a big bang ending that would tie this all up (and put me out of my misery). but even the ending was underwhelming! like yeah okay we got our answers, sure. but it all felt so left field but not even in an interesting way, i was kinda just like “oh.”
another thing is usually with murder mysteries (and even with other agatha christie stories) you’re kind of able to follow the mystery and make your guesses based off what you know of what’s happened and the characters. you try and fill gaps where the detective may have missed etc. but here you couldn’t really do that because we were working with the same information…for basically the whole book! also like i said we didn’t have a definite crime until much later and so by that point you’re like yeah okay so what because the connection isn’t made until later but not even in an interesting way (i made the connection before poirot did). and the way that connection plays out in the grand scheme of the mystery being solved is so…meh.
so anyways not my fav from agatha christie. too much of the same information for too long of the book and honestly i still have some questions. respectfully, it’s a no from me❤️

"'It was a great risk for Restarick- or rather Orwell- to take,' said Mrs. Oliver thoughtfully.
'Less than you might think...'"
Uh, no, Monsieur. That's a wild risk.

There were plenty of things I enjoyed about this one but Norma just annoyed the crap out of me. I know it was explained but she was just so ridiculous I couldn't deal with her. But Ariadne Oliver is always a hoot and I enjoy her and Poirot as a team.
