Xin Ran tells the human stories that would be forgotten by Communist China if she hadn't heard them herself.

I saw this book sitting on my friend’s bookshelf, and after reading the blurb, I was super happy when they said I could borrow it! I went into this book not knowing a lot about what was going to be discussed, but I am so glad I decided to give this book a go as I was engaged from start to finish. I am slowly starting to fall back in love with non-fiction reads, and the buzz I get from educating myself about different worldly topics.

First thing to note is that this book was written in 2002, so things and situations MIGHT (hopefully) be a lot different, but this book follows the lives of different Chinese women, their struggles, pressures and what can be expected of them in their culture. Difficulties they face simply because they were born a woman. I personally find books that give a voice to people who otherwise might not be heard so powerful, and it makes every story on the pages of this book hit home just a little bit more.

There is a lot of eye opening, heart-breaking and sickening stories included, but nevertheless, all stories that have a right to be told.
