Probably my favorite book on China. I have a passion for oral histories, which is sort of what this writer does. I especially liked her first book because it offered so much cultural insight, but all of her books are worth reading.

Unique voice and insight into what it means to be a woman in China
4.5 stars.
Great read filled with horrors and sadness faced by many Chinese women during a difficult time. I don’t think I’ll be able to forget this book.

I had a hard time rating this book. My initial feelings were to give it a 2 because the book is utterly depressing, and gave me awful nightmares. And not the fun creature feature type nightmares.....the horrifying, oppressive and sexually violent type nightmares.
However, I am glad I read the book because it introduced me to cultural perspectives on women in another place of which I was incredibly unaware. Good learning experience....not so good reading experience.

I was seven years old when I first saw what these women went through, paraded through the streets to be jeered at; I remember thinking that if there was a next life, I did not want to be reborn a woman.
This book was recommended to me as "harrowing" and that is the best way I can describe it. These stories are hard to read through, but ultimately a truly valuable testimony. There's no doubt they've been editorialised somewhat, which I'd have liked the author to be more transparent about, but they add up to a powerful portrayal that I really enjoyed discovering.
