Nacer Mujer En China

Xinran

Real-life accounts of the problems facing women in China, recounted through a series of personal stories directed through Xinran. There are unfortunately far too many of a sexually abusive nature, but this is a problem not of the book, but unfortunately society and in particular men. I have already in the past discussed the tourist nature of those reporting on social ills of others, see [b:The People of the Abyss|113250|The People of the Abyss|Jack London|http://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1349063625s/113250.jpg|1036883] but this book has a slight more honesty and humility about its approach to its subject matter.

The horrors committed in the cultural revolution, especially against women. The stories are deeply moving, yet horrifying and scarring. I'm glad I know more about the lives of women post 1949 through 1990s, but I also saw glimpses into the darkest depths of human nature.

What a powerful book and that should be read… it has moved me to the plight of my mothers country and the pain Chinese women have gone through

If it weren't for people like Xinran, the rights (and voices) of so many would be lost forever. For everyone who reads this invaluable collection - a tribute to the strength of humanity against great oppression - that's one more step in the right direction.
