4.7 - 100% recommend - heart-breaking and well-written.

Very difficult to read, incredibly awful subject matter that I was not expecting. Traumatic sexual assault topics discussed throughout the book. Important subject matter, and interesting views to reflect on for global feminism.

This book was troubling. Xinran was a radio personality in Beijing in the late 80's to mid 90's. She collected stories -- ugly, horrible stories -- from women throughout China, but was unable to publish them. When in 1997, she moved to London, she began piecing these stories together and was finally able to tell their stories.

Really, not for anyone with a weak stomach.

Wonderful and terrifying, a collection of women's stories from China, collected in the 80s and 90s. Many of the stories go deep into how women experienced the Cultural Revolution. I knew it was a tumultuous and violent time, but I had no idea that rape, and especially gang rape, was so prevalent during that time. Important book but not easy to read.

It’s hard to give this book 5 stars as I will never in my life bring myself to read it again. I have read hard books but this one was on another level. I had to stop several times and adjust and get my self back together. But as this is the purpose of the book and it’s written and told beautifully, I have to give it 5 stars.
I will never forget those stories, especially the one with the fly (have been telling all my friends about this Story as well) but they are all shocking, unique and teach you about women in China and the history in that country.
I loved it.

One of the best books I have read. Wonderfully translated into excellent English that connects both the Chinese and English world.

This would be a fantastic book club book. Basically a collection of women's stories from China during the cultural revolution, this book will shock and sometimes appall the reader. It is a piece of history that deserves to be exposed to a larger audience. Add this to your "to-read" list.
