As vidas das mulheres no mundo todo não são fáceis, mas as histórias verdadeiras contadas neste livro são extraordinárias. Me deixaram pensando como é que mulheres conseguem suportar uma vida assim?? Não todas conseguem, na verdade. Revelou como as mulheres são mais fortes que até nós mulheres acreditam. Acima de tudo, criou uma sensação que nós precisamos ser mais misericordiosos e generosos, e mostrar mais solidariedade com nossas irmãs.

Originally I really liked this, but with more thought it makes me realize that she didn't accomplish her proposed aim to "show the world the true life of a Chinese woman." The stories are sensational and brutal. Sometimes they seem almost fictional, and though I believe they could be true if she received all the mail she claims, why would she choose the most shocking to help her explain the lives of women?
Such a traumatic and eye opening account of experiences that the women of China have been through. Couldn't put this book down!
This is a collection of stories of different Chinese women, interviewed by the author, Xinran, in 1980s-90s. One of the stories is about her own childhood. The book is well written in a very simple language and is quite easy to read. This was my first book about communist China and the reading was certainly great, knowledge wise and for opening me up to a new area of contemporary social history.
This book essentially gives an idea about the patriarchy which was prevalent even in the communist (and therefore a "supposedly egalitarian") regime. Some of the stories are quite painful and shocking. A book such as this deserves to be published and read.
However, I believe that new readers should not really consider this as a reflection of the current Chinese society (I am not an expert in this area as well but I believe things may have improved, having seen some of my Chinese colleagues/acquaintances).

I didn't care for the writing/translation style but this is book is an incredible journalistic achievement and tells so many important stories.
