This is the first really good Tintin story. The thrills and adventure are top notch and you can see Hergé truly coming into his own as a comic artist. Although his first masterpiece would come soon, this isn’t that. There is one scene of a truly racist depiction of a black person that really sucks, but it’s not enough to take away from how good this story is. It’s the first fully developed plot that Hergé has done and also the beginning of the first story arc that Hergé would utilize in the series. This is the beginning of the age of greatness for Tintin and still packs a punch and is entertaining to this day.

I read some of the Tintin books as a child and had the animated adventures, so going back and reading one I'd never originally read was great fun.

Tintin, is taking a holiday, and finds himself suspected of being a drug smuggler after being framed by a mysterious person, what happens next is Tintin starts to invetigate before being arrested and managing to escape before ending up in yet more trouble, but his exploits, and fame manage to help him out. Tintin ends up travelling around getting into trouble before finally managing to discover who has been behind his troubles, great fun, and I look forward to reading more of his adventures.

Since none of the Tintin books are terribly lengthy in I'll be using this review to mark what i have and haven't read. Here's the short form: there's this Belgian kid, Tintin, who's a reporter. He travels the world with his dog Snowy and has adventures, which he then reports on, which makes him famous. Him being a famous reporter means the in the next place he visits anyone doing anything wrong assumes he's after them and use their influence to get him out of the way, usually by locking him up awaiting a future execution. But Tintin is clever and a great hand to hand combatant and makes friends easily and is really hard to kill. Eventually he'll figure out what the conspiracy is and put the bad guys away.

He then writes this up for the papers, making him more famous, so when he travels somewhere else....

They're fun, well illustrated, really well researched visually, full of gags both clever and silly, a little predictable but just right for kids (and adults who like the boys own adventure genre).

It's been a long time since I've read this one. One of the things I love about Tintin is that the series stretches to include so many different cultures and concepts in unexpected ways. Ancient Egyptian mummies and drug-smugglers? Of course these things go together...! I think my favourite part from this book is Tintin sailing the seas in a coffin, fishing for sharks. Now there's an image you don't forget in a hurry!
