The graphic novel version of Shlaes' full blown novel. A long over due look at what caused the Great Depression and why it lasted so long. Shlaes is fair to all sides and doesn't paint either side of the aisle as all good or all bad. A must read for history lovers and those who want to understand how we got where we are today. A great way to introduce younger readers to important historical events in a way that will engage them. This copy was a gracious gift from the author to my classroom. I was cleaning up my Goodreads account and realized I hadn't reviewed it. Ooops!

I really, really wanted to love this experiment in serious history told in graphic format. Unfortunately, the editors of the original material misplayed their hand. There are too many scenes packed in the ~300 pages, each presented without sufficient context. The story leaps about in a confusing way. How much better if they had concentrated on a few key anecdotes as representative of the rest--the Schecter Brothers' supreme court case, for example.

Anyway, I give this book 4 stars but it really deserves 3.5 at the most. I'm feeling generous because I've heard Amity Shlaes speak and I'm an admirer.
