What a deeply enthralling book -- I started it and got distracted by life 20 pages in, then devoured the rest of it in one sitting.

The good:
- really fascinating characters
- visceral descriptions of time, place, and state
- a twisty, turny story that keeps you wanting more

The bad:
- a few loose ends I wish I had the answers to!

Overall a fantastic read, I'd definitely recommend.

Hmmmm, upon further thought I've gone down to 3 stars from 4 - it was more of a 3.5 rounded up anyway.

For a book where not a lot really happens, I read this one pretty quickly. I was intrigued to find out Adelaide's secret, and then after that see what would happen once it was revealed.

I enjoyed elements of the book, especially the cast of characters. And I'll add in that the ending was nice. But I do with there had been more in the book. I'm not sure what, but there was just something lacking for me when it comes to the plot.

I'm glad I read it though, and that I learned some cool history about women in the West.

I’m not a fan of westerns. At all. So take from that what you will.
I actually really liked Victor Lavalle’s writing, tone/voice. I just didn’t like how they did the reveals. During the couple chapters I was thinking it’s very similar to the murders of Molly southborne or “the night sister” by Jennifer McMahnon. I think this is better written then both, but I think the plotting and reveal was done much better in the night sister.
