I really didn't like this book. The premise is very interesting but the very dark story behind the beginning of the Dauntless island feels like an afterthought. I would really appreciate some female character having a real moment in this story since from the very first pages we discover that the hero of the island is, in fact, a murderer and a rapist (he and rest of the crew rape and then "marry" women that they had "rescued"). Nobody really cares about this. Even Eddie (history student writing about those events) says that this is just a 200 years old story (when a statu of the murderer and a rapist still stand in the center of the city).
In the end, their horror is just a subject for some guy's thesis and theme for the city museum.

Spoiler:
Also, the "happy eding" for Eddie and Joe doesn't really feel like it, when you think how it would feel like to stay in a place that treated you in the away Eddie has been treated by the islanders.

Thank you Sugarplum Santa

I really enjoyed this one. It’s a slow moving story but works with the backdrop of Dauntless island. I enjoyed that the islanders were proud of their heritage and the murder mystery aspect while fluffy and light worked for me as it kept me entertained.

Good afternoons read - recommended.

What a great story, in a great setting, with an aha climax and a great ending. I've lived in insular places, so that part? Too familiar!

Minor note: at 52% in, after the third time we're told that Joe doesn't do casual flings, I tell you that this did need another edit pass. But really, it's the only flaw.

This was such a cute, cozy, bottle read. I didn’t know what I was getting into initially and I’m glad because it was such a sweet read. A whimsical mystery and a comfortable romance all in few days reading.

This is a fun quick read, with plenty of interesting characters and an island setting which really comes to life. The mystery is engaging and Hiccup the dog almost steals the show from Joe and Eddie’s burgeoning romance.

Compelling little mystery set on a small island where everyone is interconnected/related, and a 'stranger comes to town' and upsets the apple cart with some information that seriously messes with their history and world view. There's a romantic subplot, but it's more about the two MCs figuring out which islander could have committed the crimes.
