Just gutting. A poetically-delivered story of deep-seated self-loathing in Black children and adults. Internalized racism and colorism; others showing little to no tenderness for the destruction of a little Black girl’s life.

The callousness shown to Pecola in this book by all but Claudia and Frieda is so heartbreaking I almost can’t fathom it. Morrison gives you so many threads here, so many contextual insights into the characters’ displaced self-hatred. I’m thinking a lot about how Pecola shows tenderness to animals shortly before others show them cruelty.

This book was a lot to hold and I’m glad that I read it.

Another excellent book by Morrison. Other people here said it best when they said her writing is like a masterful surgeon. Morrison doesn’t fuck around! she makes characters flawed in a way that makes you hate their behavior and feel empathy for the pain they’ve endured. she zooms in and out to help the reader understand societal thinking produced from this little life. Do not turn away just because it’s at times hard to read. You will thank yourself!

I don't even know where to begin. A masterpiece of a novel, beautiful prose, but the content makes this one of if not the hardest books I've ever read
