This book was very good, but also very sad. This is not a cute historical romance, that the cover  portrays. It's a story of hardships, trauma, and the power to keep going. The gold lining of it though was the love Pearl and May had for each other and the power that it gave them.

My heart feels heavy for Pearl and May, even though they're fiction. Even though they were thought up by Lisa See, I know that their life bears resemblance to hundreds of women's life's during that time period. Growing up we are taught about the colonization of China and we are thought about discrimination again various immigrants, but we were never taught what the Chinese immigrants had to go through. This book was eye opening for me, and I'm glad Lisa See through her story is able to bring to peoples attention things that have been forgotten and looked over.
I think it's definitely a must read

my first laufey book club read, and a pretty slow read i’m embarrassed!

this story was so depressing, maybe that’s why i took my time with it. i enjoyed it immensely, but was still so turned off by the horrible events that happened to pearl and may. lisa see does a phenomenal job at writing historical fiction in that it all feels so real.

i was a little disappointed in the ending, and that’s simply because i didn’t know there was a sequel! i need to know what happens next ah!

so many annotations and standout quotes in this novel, it was excellently written for sure! i enjoyed it a lot, and i look forward to reading dreams of joy soon!
