I like the way this author tells a story. Very dark, awful, and upsetting without crossing the boundary into unnecessarily disturbing. However, there is a character towards the end who does an exposition dump monologue and goes into their childhood/upbringing and I am just not sure we needed that background information. I'm not even sure if it makes sense for the character to go into all of that.... I would have preferred they just explain what happened without the "sob story" of their childhood.

Jewell does a wonderful job at handling such a dark topic while also building a suspenseful story. I started to predict some of the twist about halfway through but was still utterly surprised by some of the things that occurred through the end of the novel.

I will most definitely be adding more mystery novels to my reading lists from now on. I had a hard time putting this down!

This is the most fucked up shit I’ve ever read !!!!! 😭 I bawled my eyes out

Very predictable but still entertaining. Read very quickly (mostly listened as audiobook actually).

Wow, what a roller coaster.

I agree with a lot of other readers - this book was very slow (like I almost DNF slow) for the first half or so and then crazy at the end. This book was a gift and one I never would have picked up on my own, and man was it a wild ride. A crazy f***ed up story at some points. I can’t decide if I would recommend it or not because I’m still reeling with the absurdity of it.

This novel was an absolutely crazy thrill ride that followed the life of a mother (Laurel) as she attempts to go on with her life after her 15 year old daughter disappears without a trace.

Laurel is divorced and living alone, cleaning the apartment of her surviving grown daughter, with whom she has a very fractured relationship.

She is a real sad sack, until she meets a man who sweeps her off her feet, and has a young daughter who looks oddly like Laurel's late daughter.

Because I have a young daughter, I usually don't read stories about abducted or missing girls, but I made an exception with this novel and I'm glad I did.

The twists and turns here are just crazy and I don't want to give anything away. It is a great read.
