I picked this up on a complete whim in the second hand book store for two reasons - I fell in love with the cover & I am a little besotted with flash fiction.
Damn. What a whim.
Epstein is a master of flash. I devoured this in one sitting and went back to reread the multiple bookmarked stories I’d made along the way. This is an absolutely perfect collection in my mind - from the story titles, to the mixture of fiction versus non-fiction, and the blending in of philosophy, psychology, religion and mythology.
His prose is divine. The ability to create a world in one sentence (one sentence!!!) is one of the toughest challenges faced by writers and Epstein makes it look impossibly easy.
