I think aside from
the Daphne taking advantage of drunk Simon
this books would be amazing! Even with that not good plot line, I will be reading the second book.

Ugh I don't know, okay. I am reading them out of order because I didn't like the Daphne assaults Simon storyline in the show and guess what! Shonda was true to the text for that, for some freaking reason. As someone who is childfree by choice, the idea that marriage would be enough for my spouse to decide otherwise makes me want to run into the woods never to be seen again.
I do think Simon's motivations sucked, but there is quite literally nothing that he could have done that would excuse Daphne's behaviors.

I did like Daphne's relationship to her siblings and the banter was fun, but god. I just can't get over how territorial every single man in these books is, and that they are constantly dick measuring about something. That with a literal spousal rape???? Count me OUT.

I'm finishing the series but only because I feel like I have to at this point.

I wanted to love this book because I love the tv show, but it landed on just a like for me. It's clear that Julia Quinn is a talented and very descriptive writer, but the story dragged at times. I also didn't love some of the characteristics of the characters (the men were a bit too overbearing and protective, for example), and the content in certain scenes left a sour taste in my mouth.

I was enjoying the banter between Simon and Daphne until she sexually assaults him. Then she and everyone in the book, including Simon, think Simon should apologize for mistreating her. Truly left a sour taste in my mouth.

as a casual fan of the show since season 2 release, books hitting as expected: outdated romance novels that think mans folly is charming and not toxic (gross).

around the moments of Simon giving me the ick for yelling at the help there were some moments not depicted in the Netflix adaptation I did like:

  •  Anthony and Daphne at a ball looking at each other's list of suitors their mother gave them and telling them which ones to avoid and which ones are actually cool
  • Violet being the best character.
  • Simon's father didn't let him go to college, so Simon showed up at the college he wanted to go to and pretended to be a student and played the "do you know who my father is" card when the headmaster asked him about his enrollment and fees and went on to graduate on that
wow he even went off to be prom queen (popular and top of his class but you know same thing)

I didn’t know what to expect when I started this book. But being panicked and uncomfortable was not it. I’m surprised I’ve never heard of the rather graphic assault scene. I will not be reading any more of Julia Quinn’s books.

Light and an easy read. Read it after I watched the show and I will say the characters feel really different from the show, which was interesting and will want to see play out.

Minus points for THAT scene, and sometimes felt a little like it was dragging on. Plus the extended epilogue was too much for me.
