I can’t leave any stars as didn’t finish this book. I read first two chapters and found it so bad I couldn’t read on. Lizzie came across really selfish and self centred - pouring out her own woes to Charlotte who had just lost a son!
Perhaps it improves as it finds its story but it wasn’t for me.

I'm a huge fan of Pride and Prejudice and was delighted to meet again some of the characters of the book.
Charlotte is a fascinating characters, well developed and realistic. I loved her as much as I loved the other well developed characters.
The book is well written and well researched, the style of writing reminded me of Jane Austen, and the historical background was vivid and well researched.
It was an excellent read that I strongly recommend.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

This was my first read of 2021 and it was a little disappointing. When I heard there was a novel detailing the life of Charlotte Lucas from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice I was intrigued. I always thought she would be an interesting character to explore a bit more.

This novel’s attempt to do just that falls short for me and it has nothing to do with whether or not it showed the life I envisioned for her. For a while I enjoyed it, but as it went on I simply enjoyed it less and less. I cannot really pinpoint what the problem was. Maybe it simply did not ring true. Maybe the characters’ actions just did not quite work for me. It simply did not do enough to keep me interested.

As far as books based on classic novels go this one really was not bad. I definitely think this one will work for many people, but it simply did not quite float my boat. I wish it had.

Wow is it bad that I want to consider this cannon now? Pretty much nothing but positive things to say about this adaptation. Only niggle... I wanted to also know what happened to Mrs Darcy and her news at the end... it hints at being positive but would love to know more!

Plot: A Pride and Prejudice retelling following the story of Charlotte Lucas, before and after her marriage to Mr Collins.

Review: I've been delaying posting this review as I'm sad to say I thought this was a bit naff. I think the author just took the characters from P&P and just ran with it.
When I think of other retellings of this famous novel that I loved - The Other Bennet Sister, Longbourn and What Kitty Did Next - rich in period detail, similar to Austen in tone and realistic storylines/character development... and then we have this.

I didn't warm to Charlotte at all, which is a huge shame as her character in P&P is so intriguing and so symbolic of the marriage market and the unstable financial security faced by women in this period. I wasn't really convinced by the portrayal of Charlotte once she was at Pemberley, and seemed at complete odds with the character we had come to know in the book. I ended up feeling sorry for Mr Collins instead!

The book starts with the death of their third child and the Collins family in mourning, with moments of emotional tenderness and connection between Charlotte and her husband. This part ends with Charlotte's realisation she does love her husband but then this takes a back seat as Charlotte goes to Pemberley and has an affair with a musician. It was like two different books mashed together

I found some of the writing and plot a bit cringeworthy - as it was a bit unrealistic given the time period. What the novel does with the character of Anne de Bourgh is just odd and seems like it was trying too hard to make it relatable to a modern audience and took liberties in developing a very minor character in the book and letting it dominate the narrative. Anne was made into a Gentleman Jack esque character and I'm sorry but in what world would a clergyman's son become the ward and heir of Rosings...

It just didn't add anything worthwhile to the P&P canon and I wish I hadn't read it...
