An atypical Western novel. For the promise of a better life, Håkan and his brother are sent from Sweden to America, but lose each other en route. Håkan ends up in San Francisco, his brother in New York. This then follows the story of a boy, and eventually a man, cut adrift and looking for his brother.

This book is a harrowing encapsulation around the heartache of loneliness, but was beautifully written. It’s a story about a man who arrives to a new country, completely alone, alienated, and everything goes wrong. He can’t communicate, has no idea where he is, has no education, and lives most of his life in complete isolation, with the handful of people who see him for who he is completely torn away. It’s a lifetime of sadness, and was more of an experience than a book.

The writing was phenomenal. It has some of the most beautiful landscape writing I’ve read in a long time. It also has some really clever writing that perfectly portrays the sheer isolation that Håkan lives in- including passages that utilise Håkan’s lack of English which leaves the reader just as clueless, and a 14 page chapter that subtlety repeats itself over and over again to show the enormity of time that this man is alone.

Overall it was captivating. Think ‘The Revenant’ level of awe.
