It was not my favorite of his books, nothing can beat Children of Time, however it does have Tchaikovsky’s signature attention to detail, wit, and scope beyond humanity while keeping humans at the center of the drama.
I want to give this an almost-four stars. It was a very entertaining mass of things and ideas and cartoon characters and amazing creatures that didn't quite feel cohesive...but I enjoyed it.

I absolutely loved this. Adrian Tchaikovsky has this way of intricately weaving a backstory alongside character development that makes you feel like you're living in the situation, rather than looking at it from the outside. You feel everything the main character is feeling. I felt this was the case with Lee in particular for me, as well as Julian. These two characters were by far my favourites,
The split viewpoints was a necessity for this one as there was just so much happening in each timeline it would have been difficult to fully understand and appreciate otherwise.
Then we reach the point where it all clicks. I love when that happens, particularly in Tchaikovskys books as we go from being completely confused to it all making sense in the blink of an eye.

Mr. tchaikovsky seems to really like exploring the idea of alternate evolution where another species on Earth rises to sentience and then pits them against humanity to explore how humans would react and behave. While I appreciate it and all the work he puts in to explain how that might occur, I wish he put in a little more work on his human characters to make them likable and more than one or two dimensional. His villians in particular always seem to be of the 'evil is as evil' does variety. This is a passable effort, but Children of Time is still his best.
