This book is very "middle book of a trilogy", in all the worst possible ways. The first book had a good premise, with some interesting mysteries and characters set up, and this book just... added nothing?

It was very drawn out with very little advancement of the plot, and very little character development. I think this book could have easily not existed at all, and the series could have been a duology with this book condensed into a few chapters at the end of the last book and the beginning of the next. If I hadn't been listening to the audiobook I probably would have DNFd this.

I will likely still read the final book, but only because I assume it will be available through borrow box like the last two. If I had paid for this book I would have been extremely disappointed.

OMG!! This series shot to the top of my favorite book series ever, it's only second to TRC. Love love love the writing, love love love the characters. I say this with nothing but love, I'm not sure there really is a plot here lol. But, as we know, I am a characters over plot ass bitch and I didn't even realize that I'm not sure anything much happened until I started writing this review.

I loooooved Belen (and her and Libby <3), so I  am a little disappointed she (Olivie Blake) killed her. She was just felt like a plot device and a waste of a good character.

Also, I know I said I love the characters, but I do not like Reina. Or at least, I feel like we didn't spend as much time with her, her motivations, her feelings, as we did for the other characters. And then when started spending more time with her, I did not really like what I saw. I guess really my only criticism of the series is that she doesn't feel as 3(4)D as the other characters. I don't even think she's 2D. Even when she started her whole "I'm a god" thing, I was like "oh alright, i guess...when is the POV gonna switch?" She just feels very bland, especially compared to the others. Unhappy about how the thing with her and Nico went? Like it was just so frustrating.

This was a difficult listen. It was very slow and tedious at times. Way too long winded and I don't really know what was going on most of the time. The last 3-4hrs of the audiobook are the only reason it's not a 2* review for me.

This is a perfect magical dark academia book series. It is cerebral, with complex characters and concepts that tangle together wonderfully. I love all of the characters, even when I am frustrated by their decisions and opinions.

It managed to give more depth to Reina and Callum in why they do what they do, help flesh out Tristan’s mysterious powers, give Libby a great corruption arc, and help make Nico less of an annoyance and more of a naive fresh take on things.

I am very excited to see where things go from here.

Reason it wasn’t a 5 star read was bc it was a bit slow to me. Now that could’ve been my fault for not being fully in the book when reading a lot of the time but still it felt a bit slow. Nonetheless the story was amazing and the twists and turns had me shook. I don’t know how I’m supposed to survive till next year before I get to read the third book but I’ll have to manage. I love this world and the idea that there’s magic and secret societies with so much knowledge. I can’t wait to see how their journeys will continue. And also the end😱😱 no way! I wanna say this: FINALLY!! And: it made me so happy and so intrigued for the next book.

I definitely do feel like I missed out on some things, like I was out of the loop or maybe I just didn’t get the subtle context clues that were provided. I also was hoping that we’d get Libby back sooner than we did, but I get why we didn’t. Can’t wait for the inevitable Tristan/Libby reunion! There were also some questions that arose in the first book that we didn’t get an answer to in the follow up. So I have to wait even longer to get answers to questions raised two books ago? That’s a little annoying. Overall, I couldn’t put this down. I really like this book and can’t wait for the next one.
