This book was terrible. It failed as a horror novel and suffered as a romance. Most of it was nonsense with a lack of thought and follow-through: there are glaring inconsistencies, dropped plot elements, little to no character development, and zero engagement.

There were very few moments in the book that were well written. The majority felt like labor and the most terrifying part of it was how much more of it was left after every page.

I can't believe I'm even saying this, but the movie looks better than the book.

Here's the thing about my relationship with [a:Stephanie Perkins|3095893|Stephanie Perkins|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1407443106p2/3095893.jpg]' books. They're all neutral. Every single book I've read from her either has 2.5-3.5 stars. That's it. The plot is enough to carry my attention and get me throughout the whole book without DNFing, but there's nothing special with the characters and the writing itself.

This book only caught my attention halfway, and I'm pretty sure I already forgot the first half of it. The characters were nothing special and there was no twist or unexpected aftermath either.
The climax of the book was the main reason this got 3 stars, but I honestly didn't enjoy this book that much.

Makani has moved from Hawaii to live with her grandmother in Nebraska. She's fallen for a boy named Ollie, made new friends and monitors her grandmother's sleepwalking problem. Life seems to be moving on for Makani, who left Hawaii under rather mysterious circumstances, however, a murderer is killing teenagers at her high school in very gruesome ways and Makani is about to become a target.

While this was a lively, cute, fluffy YA novel, and the murders themselves were interesting, the story line was shaky and weak. The reason for Makani's move was so minor that I almost tossed the book. The reveal of the killer half way through was an interesting move but gave the story no substance. Then there was the reason for the murders. All the parts of the puzzle just fell short.

So disappointed. The writing was lacklustre, the characters were bland, and the story was clumsily structured. I felt they broke a lot of rules for mysteries in the bad way. Would not recommend.

seeing the movie adaptation when i was halfway through the book helped me feel more engaged, as i def kept zoning out in the first half. the kills in the book and the movie were pretty good. reminds me of a better, more entertaining version of Clown in the Cornfield. also, my favorite narrator (Bahni Turpin) is the voice of the audio!
I just personally wasn't a fan of the ending, but it was fun seeing the differences between the movie and the book
