no words can describe the beauty and immense joy it was to read this. its very sad that no film adaptation has been able to handle the emotional queer lesbian love story at the heart of it all.

Really good but really sad. It’s definitely a classic for a reason but only read it if you can handle it.

Reading this was such an experience. The book follows Celie as she navigates her life's hardships and eventually finds peace with her own spirituality, sexuality, and sense of self. Walker is able to imbue each letter, even those that are a single page, with deep characterization while maintaining the first person POV. It does discuss a lot of difficult subject matter (including on the very first page), so please review content warnings.

I read this at an infrequent pace due to participating in a larger book club, so I'll definitely have to revisit this in a few years. I would highly recommend everyone to read this though!

"Dear Nettie, I don't write to God no more, I write to you."

This is easily one of the best books I have ever read. I understand fully why it is such the cultural cornerstone. I can't say anything about this that hasn't already been said a million times since the book was published. But I do think this is one of the greatest classics ever written and that everyone should read it.
