I've finally read this classic, in time for the latest movie (which I was surprised to see massively simplified the book, in terms of plot points and themes explored).

I really liked the book! I liked the letter structure and appreciated all of the themes covered. I certainly did not expect to laugh out loud at parts, especially so early on. Those who've read the book or seen one of the film adaptations might guess at what was the cause of this!

Didn't have as much of an emotional pull as I thought it would have though!

This book made me cry so many times, but wow, was it worth it. It has such a unique style, and I really loved getting to be a part of the characters’ growth. I feel so proud of them for all they learned.

A powerful exploration of racism, religion, lgbt erasure and sexism through the eyes of a young black lady called Celie and her sister. You follow her from her arranged marriage, separation and her bisexual relationship with Shug. You read about the growth of all characters involved in the stories as they age. From Celie finding her independence to her sister recovering from being cast out by her family.

What a stunning novel!

I’m not sure me in the past would have appreciated this as much as I can at this time in my life. As they say, books reach us at the right time. This one certainly did.

It’s a story of love, loss, redemption, and trauma. It’s life and death. Wonderful, wonderful book.
