As far as first novel in a series goes this was a good one. It laid out the setting, the main players, some potential conflicts down the road, and established Kate as a hero we could rally behind. I won’t say the plot was anything new for urban fantasy, but it was serviceable and made me want to read more installments.

So mission accomplished.

I can see why a lot of people like this book but for me it left too much unexplained. It’s tough getting the balance right between world building and keeping the plot moving and there just wasn’t quite enough there for me so I felt confused a lot. The plot was intriguing but not enough for me to continue

I was confused a lot of the time. There is a lot going on in the world and it isn't super well explained. But I feel compelled to keep reading the series, which normally isn't the case for a book that didn't blow me away. So far I much prefer the Hidden Legacy series

This book is the first in an excellent series, and though each book is complete and contained within itself, Kate is playing a long game which unfolds slowly through the series as she gains skill, power, and information. The writing is excellent, the worldbuilding is creative, and the characters are surprisingly well-rounded. The only quibbles I have are with the cover, the title, and the fact that while Kate does get injured a fair amount, she always heals really fast. Read the book. It’s fantastic.

Read it in one sitting! Super entertaining and descriptive mystery. Did it’s job in creating the satisfying escapism that I needed :)

You know... I actually really enjoyed this book. Kate was very likeable, it was like she had all the good qualities of Eugine from Richelle Mead's Dark Swan series without being annoying and unexplainably being the center of attention for everyone of the opposite sex. At least the reason for the interest in Kate is eluded to (though not completely explained, which is ok because I like a little mystery). And not all the menfolk are falling over themselves for her. Plus she's a smart ass, of which I'm always a fan.

I like it, I'm looking forward to the next one. I'd especially like to see some more of Curran, Nick, and Derrick. I love those crazy kids already.
