As an immersive arc about war, this story works really well. Fiona Staples' art is on point even if Vaughan can't make it through a volume without adding "-tard" to something. Also, the use of pig Latin was stupid and out of place. At least the Trans character's storyline wasn't about being trans this time.

Definitely feels like a Saga now, more than 40 issues in.

There’s a lot of death in this one. However you really get to see Hazel start to morph into her own person. I think this was a key turning point in her life where you understand more of why she holds the narrative that she does around love and relationships.

The more you care about someone the more likely is that your eventual parting of ways will be as sudden as it is baffling"

The most heartbreaking volume of the series.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any sadder, it did. So much loss and grief in this volume. The creators really meant it when they said back in volume 3 that Mister Heist hated the "kill your darlings" trope because whew some beloved characters were lost throughout this series and this volume is no exception.

Rhetorical question: when will this series stop destroying me? Because this one made me straight up cry. One of my favorites is dead, there are several layers of tragedy to wade through from the planetary to the familial level, and these idiots continue to make questionable-at-best or completely-messed-up-at-worst decisions with their sex lives.

And it has one of the most gut-punch endings I've ever experienced. I don't anticipate a swift recovery.
