This is a weird complaint but I wish there were more shorter chapters. I enjoyed the history but found it a bit difficult to get through.

This is a fascinating book by an excellent historian who knows how to make the past come to life. I used it extensively in researching my first novel False Tidings.

If you are interested in the minutiae of Medieval England, this is for you. Really cool idea, great writing, but some parts were a little too monotonous for me.

Do read the envoi at the end of the book as it is a beautiful summary and gives a lot of thought to how you might want to think of history books in general. As this is my first history book not for a class, I love the way it describes and puts into perspective why and who did things in the 14th century.
