Thorough and illustrative account of medieval England.
informative fast-paced

This is really enjoyable nonfiction and would be particularly useful to anyone hoping to write fiction set in medieval times.

Ian Mortimer has crafted an entertaining and informative guide to the 14th century.
I may not want to visit the 14th century, but I now have a broad and clear understanding of the people and conditions of life that was sometimes nasty, brutish, and short, but also filled with great beauty, joy, and creativity.
Highly recommended.

Excellent start and interesting concept but started to drift halfway through and felt like it had been edited to cut the size of the book down. The premise of time travelling back to medieval England and what you might encounter is excellent though and does make you think about it in a different way!

Very enjoyable, though at times the book definitely began to drag for me (starting around the "What to Wear" chapter)..

I feel like Mortimer's point to look at history as another place in time, as a living thing, is truly important. As he said, we can't truly KNOW, we can just examine the evidence we have. Great read.

informative

I absolutely loved this book! It's easy to read, entertaining, and incredibly informative. Despite being packed with historical details, it possesses a levity that made me laugh out loud a few times. I've reread it twice, and it remains just as engaging each time. Highly recommended for anyone interested in medieval history presented in a fun and accessible way.
