A fascinating way to absorb history, not the history of the acts of man but a moment in man's timeline as it could be experienced by a visitor from a different moment in the line.

I appreciate how Mr. Mortimer presents what historians know about this century, and that we should not judge others from so great a distance until we understand what daily life was at the time. I am normally hesitant to say that I look forward to re-reading a book, but I think I just might have to go through this one again! As well as some of the more-interesting looking books in the bibliography...

This had a lot of interesting information in it, but it was a reminder why I don't read a lot of nonfiction like this. I am OCD and HAVE to click on every footnote, and most of them didn't have any new information (just cited where the info came from). It made it an unenjoyable read for me and too textbook-y. However, the information itself was amazing and really gave me a sense of what life was like in my most favorite time period!

In ye olde days they didn't think they were old-fashioned, so you, dear reader, are being judgemental. Probably.

I really enjoyed this. Medieval history is my 'subject' so although lots of the material here was familiar, there were still lots of interesting details that were new to me.

I really, really love the concept of history written as a guidebook - it's a very clever way to write history and give immediacy to the past and challenge a lot of our assumptions about it. I'll definitely look out the author's other books, and the article he has written about this approach to writing history.
