Reads like a heavily- researched love letter to and about the medieval people. So good. Bonus points for fistula surgery drawing.

This book was not what I expected, but nonetheless brilliant. It was evident that a painstaking amount of research went toward the stories told and pictures painted in this work. All points of interest were hit on and given thorough thought. The audiobook was beautifully performed by Jonathan Keeble, a classic, eloquent, British voice. This book reminds readers to not too strictly apply modern standards to details of the past when time travelling through history. Be a good time traveller and learn with empathy and context.

Readable, well-categorized overview of life in fourteenth-century England.
Minor: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Child abuse, Death, Sexism, Sexual violence, Violence, Murder, Pregnancy, War, Pandemic/Epidemic
None of the above are particularly graphic or problematic but the text does at various points touch on them as part of people's lives in the fourteenth century.

It would’ve been 5 stars but I didn’t get to write my own medieval inspired novel afterwards.
An amazing book that answers all of the small questions -- what do people do for fun, what do people eat, how much for a box of nails, &. -- one might have about medieval England that other history books skip over.
