Ending is poor.

Ironically for a book titled The Deep, a lot of this felt very surface level. The plot meanders while Cutter attempts to string together a rather mean spirited backstory for our main character and by the time we start getting answers to the few interesting questions, everything is so convoluted and the gross out scares so plentiful that it all loses its bite and I don’t really care anymore. Mix that with a cast of rather unlikeable characters and I’m just left disappointed. I really loved The Troop and part of that was that the relationship dynamics of the boys feeling so realistic. I had hopes that Cutter would do something similar here by banding together a group of flawed but interesting individuals to fight off the sea-sillies, but alas no dice. The one character I did like was the dog and, spoiler alert, she dies

I really liked the plot line and how messed up some of the imagery was, but I found there was too much horror imagery to the point where it felt over-saturated. Still enjoyed it though.

Nick Cutter has a way of crafting a horrifying sentence that will worm its way into your brain, tickling at the edges forgotten, only to come roaring back later when you least expect it. His descriptive flair where body horror is concerned is exceptional.

That being said, the plot and character work in this one left me cold, as did some pacing choices. The end felt both predictable and out-of-place -- but the journey there was as dark and twisted as the passages of the Trieste.

Not a book I see myself revisiting, but I'll be tuned in for the next one.

Spooky!

Trigger warning: dog death

That was an incredibly unpleasant experience.
