This was so much more than I expected. I had tears in my eyes few times.
Brute is a big and ugly man ridiculed by people from his village. In thanks for saving prince's life, he gets a job at the palace. He has to be a jailer for only one special prisoner - Gray, the witch and the traitor, who at nights dreams about the deaths of the people nearby. Gradually, they become more and more familiar with each other and Brute finally finds his place in the world.
Aric/Brute is a great character, so kind-hearted and gentle. I loved to watch him gaining his value and his evolving relationship with Gray. The only thing the story is missing in my opinion is the epilogue, I would love to see Aric and Gray finding their peace, either in their travels either in the palace.

I honestly did not see this book coming. I knew all my friends liked it, but I avoided reading the blurb & reviews for over a year, and from the cover I thought it might be a Stockholm Syndrome story (which, considering my reading habits, wouldn't have been an issue at all). Wrong! This is the sweetest, most gentle love story ever.
The first chapters were sad, but they created a wonderful touchstone for the main character's development. And speaking of the MC, nothing prepared me for Brute.
I fell in love with him from the very first sentence. He made me gush, and awwww and sniffle, and root for his happiness.

Then Gray appeared, and that was another kind of heartbreak altogether.
Reading about these two men living in the darkness, finding their way towards the light, was like a balm to the soul in these troubled times.
Very much recommended.
It's not a 5 because of one minor issue regarding the sex - a lot of telling, not much of a showing. It would have been fine in any other case, but this time, the "how" needed a little more description. .

I really liked this book but it felt unnecessarily long. At times I got tired of the slow pace. All in all, another amazing one by Kim Fielding.
I like it. It's kind of a reversed telling of the Beauty and the Beast, since the "Beast" rescues the "Beauty", but I like it.
I like the characters and how the interact with each other. I like how it is shown that not how one looks like but how they act is important and that being kind is the way to go. I really like that Gray didn't magically got his eyes restored too.

Brute es la historia de un hombre de 7 pies de alturas que siempre ha sido ridiculizado por lo increíblemente feo y anormal que es, hasta que un día salva a un príncipe que le ofrece trabajar en su castillo y su vida cambia al tener que cuidar de un prisionero del que a enamora y aprende muchas lecciones a través de la historia.
Esta historia no es para todos, es más sobre Brute (nuestro protagonista) y de todas las consecuencias que sufre tras años de ser tratado como lo peor de lo peor y sin ningún afecto mostrado hacia el. Hay una relación amorosa pero es rara,bonita, pero extraña. El libro no tiene nada de acción o plot twists para hacerlo interesante, es sólo sobre Brute y lo mucho que se desprecia, de Brute aprendiendo a leer, Brute haciendo amigos, Brute teniendo sexo, Brute salvando a la gente. Pero nada de eso es tan interesante como para mantener la atención del lector, al menos que vengas por el romance, el cual tampoco esta tan bien desarrollado como para satisfacer a alguien.
