An interesting read while still in the midst of a pandemic. This novella is definitely tinged with a darker feel than past novels as Penric has to pull on his experience as a physician (and the trauma associated with that). There are some moments of camaraderie and humor, but is probably the heaviest of the Penric novellas. Bujold balanced the emotion of this book very well, but I missed the happy chaos of previous books. Not a favorite, but perhaps it will be after 2025.
