I hate descriptions like "Miraculous novel" as the blurb for this book suggests, however it was a very good read. The unhappiness and frustration of Madeleine, in particular, is tangible from the outset. Margie appears less outwardly rebellious at first but also develops into what could be called a "feisty' Character. The storyline is about not fitting the mould that parents create as well as about finding your own place in life. It is well written and the characters are sharp and defined. It moves smoothly between the two story lines although at times i needed my dictionary for words that did not fit with the style of the writing "docent" and "exegeses" are just a couple of examples.
lighthearted reflective slow-paced

I really enjoyed this book, it was interesting & inspiring! I loved the premise of modern-day Madeleine discovering her grandmother's journals and in doing so, really discovering her grandmother and herself. This is a great exploration of how we, as women, often live our lives based on others' expectations of us. What would happen if we step out of those confines to follow our dreams?

I wasn't 100% sure about this book - it was one I picked up on a whim during a shopping trip. I absolutely loved the back and forth between current day and the past, and I now wish I could go to Paris myself!

I don't regret finishing this book... but I also probably would not recommend it. The story is really fun and interesting, but I found the writing style repetitive.

Maybe a 3.5

An enjoyable romp of generally light reading material which is exactly what I needed right now.

Having two storylines during two different time periods, it does suffer from the problem that most books of this nature do - one storyline is way more interesting to me than the other. Regardless, I had fun with it.

The concept was a great one. The middle third of the book lagged and was redundant--especially the increasing whininess of the narrator. I wanted to scream at her--if you're so unhappy, then do something about it. I tried to have empathy for her experience but struggled. The action in the last third of the book could have been spread out to correct pacing issues. I was frustrated by all of this because I really wanted to like the book more.

A light-dessert kind of book that hits exactly the right notes for easy, pleasurable reading.

Good, light read -- beautiful descriptions of Paris.
