The throwback to the grandmother was great, but it felt like it wrapped too quickly between both views and just kinda... Was done
2 woman, generations apart, struggle to find their independence and celebrate their art. Madeline, in 1999, is trapped in a life of expectations to be perfect and a loveless marriage and has abandoned her art. On a visit to her family home she discovers her grandmother Maggie's journals. Reading Maggie's struggles to escape the conventions of her life on a trip to Paris allows Madeline to explore her own choices. An enjoyable read that has you rooting for both women.
first, this is not a book about the war as I guessed off the title. second, if you get through the first 50 pages and are like me and wonder if it gets any more complex than whining about rich Lady problems, it does. I spent the next while debating whether the characters would do anything interesting enough to count the overall story as interesting... while there weren't any surprises, the moral of the story is to be brave in search of your happiness. even if your a rich Lady whose mom and husband control your money and what you eat.
If you're looking for a book filled with wimpy female characters, more loose ends than you can count, horribly flat characters and a book rife with cliches, then here it is. I picked this book up on a whim and, if I'm being honest, probably picked it out because of its attractive cover and because I've always wanted to go to Paris. I've also read many amazing books that transported you through time via a character's journal entries... but this just wasn't it. Both Madeline and her grandmother might as well have been the same person. They're both privileged whiny women who don't fit society's mold because they're artists and not considered to be attractive. (Seriously how unique are you when you are both carbon copies of each other?) Not even halfway through the book I considered giving up with this book, it was so cliche and monotonous (I actually fell asleep quite a few times reading this during the day), but I forced myself to finish and sadly it did not get any better. Don't waste your time. This is basically just chick lit with one woman stuck in a marriage she was "forced" into (seriously, take some accountability!) and another lamenting the fact that her parents won't let her become a writer and that no man will ever find her attractive. Chances are you've basically read this book before.
I read this book slowly, in bits and pieces. And I am so glad I did. It was a short but sweet read. I loved, as always, the freedom that can be found in Paris. Definitely worth the read and makes me wish for Paris.
This was a fun escapist read. I had read Weird Sisters and enjoyed the story but not the writing style. I have to say this book engaged me on both levels. So much easier to read this am Weird Sisters and I loved the plot, characters and setting. Looking forward to reading more by Ms. Brown
This was a different story in the sense that you don't always see characters such as Madeleine. Her always doing things because of what other people wanted or appeared to want for her really struck me. I've always been able to follow my heart in what I've wanted to do with my life and who I chose to marry. It was good to see her gain courage to be herself as the story went on. I love the new life she achieved by standing up for herself and what she wanted. The art and writing aspect of this story really hit home for me as well. You should never give up on the things you love.

Review
The book was excellent, but the characters seem the same as in the Weird Sisters. Not in name of course, but in trait and description.
