Original. Inventive. Funny. Dark. Emotive. These and many more feelings are provoked through the voices of the characters that are within the anthology such as Mrs Beast, Queen Kong, and Frau Freud. Duffy draws inspiration from various stories in fiction and life but subverts them with some contemporary twists. The choices that Duffy makes in regards to tempo, rhythms and rhymes really add to the narrative of each piece and make for the poetry to be that much more enjoyable.

I’ve found this to be quite difficult to critique but I would say that I definitely had some favourites within the anthology and some poems that I didn’t enjoy as much. I also found that some of the poems felt a little bit repetitive as can be the case when it comes to conveying very similar messages with the only difference being the female voice that is expressing them.
