While I enjoyed the language of the plays, the characters maintained an attitude of cynicism that persistently rubbed me the wrong way. The constant drinking and persistent sexualization of women were constants that I found both absorbing and distasteful. While I am perfectly capable of rooting for (or rooting against) an anti-hero in the right context, the entire universe these characters were placed in seemed built from a crude, hopeless fabric that convinced me that McPherson and I must hold entirely different world views. The different plots were always highly interesting in their creativity and unpredictability, but throughout my time with this book I felt rather like I was watching a car crash rather than reading a series of plays. I was frightened, confused, and uncomfortable, but I couldn't look away.

I won't say that I enjoyed these plays, exactly, but I always felt spurred on to finish reading them. Whether that is enough of a reason to read a book is up to you.
