I don't read much poetry, but a friend on instagram (@vanarchism) raved about this and so I grabbed a copy, precisely because I hadn't recently read much poetry.

The feature of the book is "The Glass Essay" with such a vivid portrayal of moorland and visceral connection to Wurthering Heights that I had to double check the author wasn't British (she's not, and Canada has moors too it seems).

My favourite though of this short collection is "The Fall of Rome: A Traveller's Guide" - dark and sensuous. Blending the modern with the ancient. I've never been to Rome and now am passionately hoping to go.

"II.

There is a kind of pressure in humans to take whatever is most beloved by them
and smash it.

Religion calls the pressure piety and the smashed thing a sacrifice to God.

Prophets question these names.

What is an idol?

An idol is a useless sacrifice, said Isaiah."

“I grin.
I eat.

Thousand of cuts morning and night,

practicing fierce techniques of horrible war! useless.
Dread masters me.
I do not master dread.”

Anne Carson is a poet whose words wash over and envelop you; like she is chasing moments down with her pen. Fleeting attempts to construct language for matters of the flesh and the soul and god that are unbearably visceral you could weep. I can’t find the kernel of True Meaning in her poetry, and I don’t want to - her works are almost more of the body than the mind. The last work in this collection is a standout for it’s more theoretical nature, and it’s incredible to me how Carson can switch with such ease from creative to critical - and parts of her critical theory are found as well in the creative parts

I did NOT get TV Men at all, it definitely slowed my reading down and is the main reason my rating for this got lower than I thought, I will probably have to re-read those pages at least a few more times and hopefully I'll finally decode them. The Glass Essay is an obvious standout.
