This book gripped me by the shoulders and didn’t let me go until I read the last word. It was honestly good. The plot had so so much potential. But I can’t give it more than 2 stars because of the plot holes. So much happens In this book that we don’t figure out.
1-her mom died from a fire. She hints at her mother having done something. She says something like why would she do that. But we never find out what. We don’t know how the fire started. We just know her mom died.
2-Allie was assaulted. But she doesn’t file a report. Doesn’t get a kit done. And doesn’t follow through. The reason for her assault was to get back at her dad for a deal gone bad. But we don’t know what the deal was. We don’t even know what he truly does. Just that he’s super rich.
3-the author decides to have the only described black character be held at gunpoint. All so Roman’s dad (the police chief) can find out that Allie knows Roman. And this leads to Romans sad telling him about her assault. This is wrong on so many levels.
A) she is a minor. So he had no business as a cop telling anyone that. Major breach of confidentiality and in the real world he’d be fired.
B) I absolutely hate when authors use tropes in a stereotypical way. Some examples: Black person facing police brutality. The lgbtq+ side character only being used as Comedic relief. If you are going to incorporate this into your book give them depth. Don’t just use it as a way to advance the plot then do nothing about it. It’s infuriating.
4-Allie has three other best friends from her original school that are briefly mentioned. One becomes active in the plot but the other two are just used as an object of jealousy for Dominique. We don’t learn about their personalities. They get basically no page time. They are completely irrelevant to the plot.
5-Allie very clearly had an eating disorder which is never addressed as such in the book. Everyone notices it. Nobody takes action.
Overall I enjoyed this book but it could have been done better. I won’t read the rest of the series because the descriptions seem copy and paste.
