An endearing Japanese folklore tale that weaves traditional, imperial values with romantic persuasion.
Xian has been searching for the enigmatic White Snake for 7 years after a fatal bite left his mother in critical conditions, resulting in the progression all decline towards her death. Xian will scoure the lands in pursuit to reclaim the pearl that will heal his mother's ailment.
Zhen and Qing are shape-shifting snakes that have been blessed with the ability to appear human; protecting their skin and organs from hunters. However, as Zhen and Qing arrive in Changle where their paths cross with Prince Xian, there is more than just lives at stake.
Comprehensive worldbuilding and character growth is essential for any fantasy novel that relies solely on the progression of a relationship; and the narrative delivered. The progressive nature of Xian and Zhen's characters colliding made for a push-and-pull storyline (will they, won't they) that slowly introduced aspects of the Japanese imperialism, militarianism, and folk beliefs that blended the magical essence of the storytelling. Qing and Feng were fantastic companions for the characters, acting as opposites for our protagonists, offering guidance and head strong attitudes alike.

This is a beautiful retelling.
I also think it’s a great option for anyone that is considering picking up the increasingly popular translated Danmei historical fantasy series like Heaven Official’s Blessing, Husky and his white cat Shizun, etc, but hasn’t read much in the way of East Asian fantasy yet.
You get the pacing of a western novel with out any hiccups around translations, but still being introduced to things like naming conventions, mythology and culture.
This is a YA romance although I’d say it’s more a “NA” based on the issues and age of the MCs. The intimacy is closed door but it’s happening regular (unlike some YA that are just working up to the first kiss by the epilogue).
Overall I really enjoyed it.

As 2025 is the year of the snake this book seemed perfect to get into. I absolutely adored every line written and this innocent love story set in ancient china with the perfect amount of fantasy and historical details is nothing short from great similar novels like song of achilles or they both die at the end. Even though its not the longest book all of the characters are so lovable and close to my heart. This was my first novel of hers and I can‘t wait to read more of Sher Lees.
10/10 would recommend please give this a shot i‘ve seen way to little of this book beeing talked about.
