I really like Zhen's first chapter, but that was about it. The couple and their development felt very bland, and sometimes the story bordered on boring. Zhen was a likeable character, a good boy that could come across as a bit of a doormat at times. The other main character, Prince Xian was the worst. The only time the story didn't feel bland was when this man was making me rage with his hypocrisy. The relationship had a bit of a power imbalance, and progressed too fast. At time I thought maybe Xian was a secret villain.

The pacing felt a bit off. Like everything got shoved in on the end. Villains were appearing and getting dealt with one after the other, and sometimes came across as silly.

Zhen is a snake with a heart of gold!! When the book started, I felt like Xian was very spoiled and a playboy, but he grew on me. There's heart-wrenching angst, desperate escapes, betrayal, wooing, romance... it's pretty amazing! Also, this is one of my all time favorite covers.
