when i first started reading this i thought id dnf it but god im so glad i didn’t. the beginning was quite slow and seemed generic but the more i read the more enthralled i became. the book has everything i love. it was wholesome, had realistic characters and reactions, love able characters and a surprising antagonist, and a beautiful ending that admittedly made me sob like a baby. god i loved this story so much i cant rank it more highly

Gosh, I went through a rollercoaster of emotions here. I had so much fun reading this, I really couldn't put it down. I thought the story was paced well, and the romance believable (and made me blush, excuse me). It's cute, really!! And informative for snake friends and anyone new to chinese drama (xianxia) type media and culture. 

I felt something missing---and maybe this is me not reading enough YA (?), or me not reading more fantastical stories like this in general. The writing was easy to understand but didn't leave room for me to think.

Me, a silly goose: because it's a story, not a character study.

Anyway, this was refreshing and a timely pick-me-up for me, personally. And I just...adore the leads (personal bias). They were soulmates!

It was good. I liked the worldbuilding and the details. However, I had a hard time with the book as Zhen was my absolute favourite, and he deserved everything in the entire world and far less trauma. He was incredibly emphatic despite all the pain and suffering he went through: one of the truest forms of strength is remaining kind despite adversity. One thing I didn’t love was the dynamic present for most of the book. I only truly got into it once they were on a more level playing field and the power dynamic was less troubling. This was a very small portion of the book. 
I don’t regret reading it, but I don’t think I’ll read it again.
