The cover of this got me and then I saw queer retelling of Chinese myth and I knew I had to read it. Unfortunately I found most of the book to be really bland. The relationship was very insta-soulmates, which is a hard sell for me, and I found a lot of the plot and characterization lacked any sort of depth. While I love that this is a standalone fantasy, I would have loved to see this be a bit longer so that depth could be built up because as it is I read this two weeks ago and am already struggling to remember any details about this.

I finally finished The Legend of the White Snake by Sher Lee and I am so glad I got the chance to read this book. The writing is beautiful, the incorporation of Chinese culture was so well done and the pacing was perfect, I could not put the book down. The characters felt real and I truly rooted for them throughout the story. I am sad to let this book go, because it truly is a 5/5⭐️. I would encourage anyone to give this a try, especially if you love Heaven Official’s Blessing. Thank you to harpercollins for giving me this ARC, The Legend of the White Snake is out October 15th at major book retailers.
I like whenever I read a book that teaches me things about another culture while keeping me engaged in the story being told. "Legend of the White Snake" is one of them!
Chinese customs, traditions and even fashion are showcased without being overwhelming. Chinese terminology is shared within the story - no glossary hidden in the back where you have to flip back & forth. This is a plus for me!
I enjoyed this fantasy folktale retelling more than I thought I would. I wasn't familiar with the original folktale, so I looked that up before I started reading. I loved the twists this gave : a queer prince who falls for a male snake spirit, all told within a fantasy world.
Prince Xian & Zhen's love and affection for each other grows & they let nothing stop them from falling - even the truth about who Zhen is. There are a few twists that I did not expect! Each character has a place & purpose, plus the pacing was just right.

i think xian should have cried his apologies for 100 years for some of the SHIT he said to zhen. this was cute, Y/A to its very core, but I would love to see more stories like this...
