Perfectly written mystery with a fun spooky atmosphere and an entertaining cast of characters

Kul krim bok. Håpe for all del Sherlock Holmes tar sæ tia te å utforsk bræmse sporan i trusa mi som neste oppdrag

Sin duda el mejor caso de Sherlock Holmes que he leído hasta ahora. Tengo que aceptar que mi querido Watson me da ternura por alguna razón desconocida, como dice Sherlock su inocencia solo dan ganas de sacarle ventaja.

I think I would’ve enjoyed it more if I didn’t have to read it for school. Although it was pretty good

Oh, man. I don't know why it took me so long to finish this. This should have been a relatively quick read since it's not an overly difficult book to get into. I think it was my insecurity and lack of confidence in myself and my abilities as a reader and consumer of books that derailed me in my enjoyment of this book.

This is not the fault of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who is without a doubt a very skilled writer that contributed tremendously to the mystery genre. I just felt that I wasn't as engaged as I should have been for this type of fiction. Had I forced myself to really focus, I think I would have appreciated the book more. Nonetheless, I felt the book was worth my life and I was glad to have read it because Doyle is at his best here. "The Hound of the Baskervilles" is a solid detective story as Sherlock Holmes and Watson are well defined characters who leap off the page. As I read this book sporadically, I could understand why they have endured in popular culture. They are so competent, yet they have such likability that you would follow them wherever they went.

The mystery itself seems typical to the modern reader who has watched many TV episodes of various procedurals. However, this didn't stop me from enjoying this book because the mystery has an element of the "supposed" supernatural. A rich estate owner has been found dead and there are rumblings around that he might have been killed by a strange hound-like creature. Holmes and Watson are tasked with figuring out what truly happened and if there was indeed a hound or if it's all just a myth.

What helps elevate this novel from mere by the numbers detective story is the atmosphere and setting. The Baskerville manor and the surrounding areas feel like characters themselves. The dialogue and plot move along smoothly with twists and turns and clues abound. It's a well-executed mystery from a man who is so good at writing them.

I think I'll have to revisit this novel sometime in the future when I try to train myself to have a longer attention span.
