i was just complaining about poetry to amanda, after reading "180 more" and being turned off by the high levels of pretension & casual sexism. then i went home and read this book and it made me feel about 100 times better. THIS is why i liked poetry--the wingnuts trying to capture an elusive moment! my favorite part was the account of sparrow and the unbearables protesting the offices of the new yorker for being too safe in their poetry choices, and leading the crowd in a chant that went: "NO MORE SESTINAS/ABOUT BALLERINAS!" amen (even though i love sestinas)

if i could give this book more than five stars, i would. let the star on the cover stand for the next level of rating. it is small and precious and i just stumbled upon it.
