I thought the book was pretty good for what it was worth, it kind of felt like I was reading a tv soap drama covered in detailed, nature-filled imagery. The plot was super interesting and I felt invested in seeing how Kya would develop, most other characters though didn't have as much depth. It was entertaining and easy to read, so I just took it as it was. Did anyone else think the author talked about nipples too much during any of the sex/sexual scenes??? lmao
Also, listened to this via audiobook and really wished I had just read it. Definitely didn't catch how the dialect of characters would vary.

The descriptions of the coastal marsh setting and wildlife were the best part. Otherwise not a very compelling plot. Contains a significant racist trope.

In the beginning, it was hard, at least for me as a non-native speaker, to follow the story because of the specific vocabulary and the conversations in slang and dialect. But by the middle of the book I got better and still it is beautifully written, almost like a piece of art. It's so detailed and touching that I felt like I was right there with them! The raw and authentic portrait of the time added to that feeling. Kya's coming-of-age story is heartbreaking, but also full of heartwarming resilience. I really like Kya - she's such a lovable and fascinating character! Unfortunately, I found the ending quite weak: lots of events but very little emotion.
